SHURE M97xE PHONO CARTRIDGE AUDIOPHILE

In recognition of its musical excellence, the Shure M97xE has been graced with The Absolute Sound Editors Choice Award for Cartridges below $500 in 2007, 2008 and 2009. (The Absolute Sound Issue 175). Designed for music listeners seeking a sensibly affordable and exceptional all-around performer, the Shure M97xE cartridge offers a generally neutral tonal balance, excellent tracking and an overall presentation that is effortlessly smooth and musical.

As one of Shure's best phono cartridges, the Shure M97xE low-mass moving magnet cartridge includes performance boosters such as a dynamic stabilizer damper, de-staticizer, and a diecast aluminum mounting block. Together, these enhance the capability of the cartridge to deliver superior, detailed, and very accurate sound.

The Shure M97xE is a superb sounding phonograph cartridge designed to provide long hours of undistorted listening, without fatigue. Its highly precise tracking ability and flat frequency response are made possible by Shure's unique Type II low-mass thin-wall aluminum alloy stylus cantilever, combined with a precision-crafted, finely polished, elliptical diamond tip.

Not everyone's hearing is the same. A lot of people say this cartridge sounds rolled off to them...it measures that way. But when I had to put one of these on my tonearm as a yeoman back up to my JICO'ed V15xMR, I was pleasantly surprised. Smooth, even balanced sound...hard to catch it out with any coloration or mistracking at all. True, the soundstage was not quite as wide or deep or layered as my V15VxMR (which I wish Shure still made replacement styli for!). But overall, the sound was very similar. I have heard tell that Shure's QC is all over the map with this one. I must've been lucky, and gotten a good one. I think this cartridge will be at its best with low to medium mass tonearms. It's either this one, or the Nagaoka MP110-I think I'll try that one at some point.

The rolled-off treble makes bright records sound fine. But normal records sound muffled and turgid. Quality control for internal wiring makes for unpredictable hum and-or signal dropoff. Stabilizer may work in some or be too stiff in other samples, or optionally "off". Replace stylus with JICO SAS or Neo-SAS and it converts into a giant killer worth the total expense.
